“We will get there, we will get there.” Lucas makes a displeased sound, but I ignore him and start reading from the new romance novel we have started. This one is a bit steamier, and I’m a bit shocked when my heart races at the love-making scenes. I feel ridiculous for reading them out loud to Lucas, but he doesn’t comment on this. He listens to every word I say, and I only stop reading when his breathing slows, and he falls asleep.

We as humans like sex. We like having it, watching it, and reading about it. As long as something is in the realm of being appropriate, if it gets you in the mood, go for it.” The waiter brings us our drinks and Chloe takes a sip of wine before going on. “And it’s no secret watching p**n or reading about people having sex can get you in that mood.” She turns to me again, gaze intimate. “Writing about it does too.”

A sharp bell rang out, echoing through the night. A shrill voice announced, "The time has come. Let the bride enter!" A black carriage, lavishly decorated yet unsettling, rolled in slowly. The door opened, and a bride in a blood-stained wedding dress stepped out gracefully. "Where's my groom?" George hurried over, waving for the puppets to drag me away. He pointed at the players seated at a long table. "My lady, please take a look. Which one do you favor?" The bride lifted her veil. Blood slid down her face like melting wax. Her crimson eyes swept across the crowd. "I'm not satisfied with any of them. Not a single one looks pleasing."

"What do I need to do, sir?" His expression grew even darker. "Are you in for this bet?" "I'll leave it to your discretion," I answered. That response seemed to infuriate him. I could see his grip on his wine glass tighten, his knuckles turning white. "Fine, let's bet." The cards were dealt, and the game was on. I did not get the rules of the game, but the vibe? That I could read like an open book. Everyone was as still as statues, barely breathing.

I just sighed heavily. I also went upstairs to read. I really like reading some novels especially Romance genre. It feels real and my imagination is really working when I'm reading those scenes that I like. I imagined that I am the main character and wished that I have a happy ending with my partner. But most especially, the lessons of life.

I sit on the edge of the bed and pull the blanket up to her chin. “Story,” she demands softly, eyes already drooping. I smile. “You don’t ask. You order.” She grins, entirely unashamed. I reach for the book she picked earlier, a soft-covered children’s romance about a brave princess and a gentle knight who travel across kingdoms to find each other again. I hadn’t thought much of it when she chose it. Now I wonder if children instinctively gravitate toward truths adults try to avoid. I begin reading, my voice calm, warm, steady.
