so I never really dove deep into Harry/Ron until I stumbled onto this one fic called 'In the Weeds' over on AO3. It's a post-war Hogwarts eighth-year thing where Harry becomes obsessed with Herbology and Ron's there helping him, and the author just nails their banter—the kind where you can tell they're both a little broken but they're healing together through these quiet greenhouse moments and stupid arguments about fertilizer.
What gets me is how the writer doesn't force them into this dramatic romance right away. It's all small gestures, like Ron bringing Harry treacle tart after a nightmare even though they're not talking about why Harry woke up screaming. The pining is so understated it aches. It's definitely a slower read, but that makes the payoff feel earned, not just wish-fulfillment.
I will say the Ron characterization is tricky in this pairing—some writers make him too simple or just jealous. The good fics let him be smart in his own way, with that strategic mind from chess, and let Harry appreciate it. This one does that. There's a scene where Ron explains a pruning technique and Harry just watches his hands and realizes, oh. Yeah.
