Clutching her phone, she burst into tears and ran into the bathroom. From outside, I could vaguely hear her making a complaint call. Her voice was nothing like usual—pinched and cloying, unpleasant to listen to. Grinding her teeth, Joey dropped back into her chair. The other roommate, Carmen Radler, asked worriedly, "She isn't really dating Nick, is she? We really can't afford to offend someone like him." Joey snorted. "So what if she is? We're in the right—what's there to be afraid of? Does he really think he can bend the law? We got into this university on our own merit!"

discount, putting the rent just within my budget. The owner, a girl named Maeve, seemed to be overseas. We could only talk over a staticky phone line. She explained it was a two-bedroom, which meant sharing. I didn’t care. I needed out of that hotel, fast. “A roommate? I’m fine with that. Is it you I’d be sharing with?” Maeve’s voice cut in and out through the static. “...owner… living there? Yes… If that’s… okay… you should sign the lease soon.”

Moving in with three men was supposed to be practical. Cheap rent. Safe neighborhood. A four-bedroom house that costs less split four ways than my studio apartment did alone. I found the listing on Craigslist – "3 guys looking for a 4th roommate, gender irrelevant, must be cool with loud music and protein powder in the blender" – and signed the lease after a five-minute tour because the room had a window seat and I'm a sucker for natural light.

he stammered, the hesitation in his voice impossible to disguise. It wasn’t really my place to pry. “Am sorry, I didn’t mean to pry into your privacy. After all, we were nothing more than roommates… and occasional fuckmates. There was no exclusivity between us,no obligations,no promises and certainly no claim over one another—nothing that justified my curiosity. Bang. Bang. Bang. Three firm knocks resonated through the apartment, shattering the uneasy silence. I instinctively lifted my head, my brows knitting together. Who on earth could that be now? I wondered.

The helpless look on my roommate Lily Carter's face froze instantly. She stared at me, clearly not expecting that answer. "Jamie Lane, what is wrong with you?" She kept her voice low, but there was no hiding the irritation in it. "I'm just going to a walk-in clinic to get some ibuprofen. Why would you call an ambulance? Are you trying to get our advisor involved?" I slipped the attendance sheet back into my backpack and zipped it shut. "Campus housing rules require residents to notify the dorm staff before leaving campus overnight."

asked Aithusa as she came back in the room. “Why don’t you get a room mate?” asked Aiden. “Room mate?” asked Aithusa as she raised her brows and then looked at Aiden. He nodded solemnly and said,” Of course, Roommate. I mean someone who will be sharing the apartment with you…and then your rent will be split and the risk will be also mitigated. You shall be also not alone. I think that it will be something which will help you out.” “Do you know someone who would be willing to live with me?” asked Aithusa and then Aiden smiled.

"Not really, only five places, including this apartment! this apartment is by far the best!" "Is that so? earlier, the man said there was an empty apartment with three bedrooms. If you don't mind, how about we share a room?" "What? share a room? with you?" ***

She dropped her arms around my shoulder and said, “Best friends.” “Aw. You guys are so lucky. I just got in the next room,” Karen points with her right hand, “but I haven’t met my roommate yet. We spoke online though and she seemed cool but you never know. Anyways, I’m just glad we got the double rooms and not the triple occupancy rooms. One roommate I can deal with, two I’m not so sure.” Karen was the person who was banging a hammer into her wall. Way to go girl. Disturbing my peace and now disrupting our meeting.

“Right. Keep telling yourself that, princess.” “What do you want?” “I guess he told you. We’re going to be roommates.” “I wouldn’t put it that way.” “So how would you put it?” “We’ll be sharing a condo. Separate rooms.” “If you shared a two-bedroom place with anybody else, wouldn’t you call them your roommate?”

I had the smallest room at the top of the stairs, and Mark had the largest one at the end of the hall next to the bathroom. After the tour, I asked, "What do you think? Rent is $350, and utilities are just gas and electric. They usually run about $20 each per person." Almost without hesitation, she said, "Actually, I think this could work. It's only fifteen minutes from work, and I like the area. It'd be fun having two guys as roommates too, as long as you're okay with having a girl as your third roommate. I can bring the deposit on Tuesday and move in next weekend. Does that work?"
