I huff quietly and do my best to ignore his leering eyes as he pushes the dazed woman away from him and licks the remaining blood from his lips. “Rosalyn is it? Don’t be shy and come stand beside your master,” Matthias says to me as he places his glass on a brown coaster on the coffee table. The way he calls Paul my master makes my skin prickle. Paul fists his hands but looks to me and nods for me to come stand beside him. I opened the door just a few inches and saw a small cardboard box sitting on the carpet with no name and no return address, so I pulled it inside and opened the lid while the others crowded around me to see what was inside. Resting on a bed of white tissue paper was a single rose made of delicate glass and the stem was broken in half so it looked dead and jagged, and I knew immediately that it was a message from Elena Romano because that rose was the symbol of the investment firm we had burned down in Berlin.

Hearing that, my departed soul turned away, smiling miserably.
