The road had widened into a proper highway, other vehicles pulling aside as our royal-crested SUVs approached.
"Where are we?" I asked, my throat dry and painful.
"Almost there," Dr. Thornwood said, offering me a water bottle. "That's the royal city in the distance."
I looked where she indicated, and my breath caught. Rising from the valley ahead, illuminated by the setting sun, stood the legendary city I'd only heard about in stories. Stone walls surrounded buildings that climbed toward the sky, and at the center, perched on the highest point, the royal palace gleamed like a crown of stone and glass.
