What else could it be? The sleep didn’t come. I kicked the covers off and walked around the room. There wasn’t much in it. A small lamp, a bathroom, a shelf with a few books. I pulled one out and coughed slightly from the dust that came with it. “ ‘The Red One’ by Gracie Evans.” I hadn’t read this book before. It seemed interesting. Just as I was about to turn the first page, there was a heavy thud at my door. My heart sank into my chest, and I dropped the book. The thug came again, lighter this time, followed by the sound of muffled voices.

Nothing gave away the identity. My fingers hovered over the spine, then unsuccessfully I tried to read it but I could read one word. ‘Rogue’ My hand froze. Rogues? The memory of those rogues in the ruins flashed in my mind. Was this book about rogues? Who were they? Why were they… Then suddenly a voice came like smoke against my ear. “You like touching things that don’t belong to you?” I gasped, spine stiffening, heart leaping into my throat. His scent hit me first—stormy, rich, dangerous.

I try again to mind link him with no answer. I hear footsteps down the hall coming towards my door. I quickly stand as tall as possible, which is hard because I am so tired and my legs barely hold me up anymore. I have to though; I refuse to show him any sign of weakness. I recognized the title as a classic piece of American literature, but I've never read it myself. His copy looks distinctly different from the rest of his books. The others look either new or almost new, but this one looks as though it has been read several times. I settle on the couch, open the book, and begin to read. ~~~ I freeze when I hear thumping outside on the porch. The doorknob rattles. I stare at the door in terror. A loud knock sounds. It's probably Ryan. It's got to be him. Definitely.

While I am waiting, I pick up the book by his bedside and read the title, ‘Six of Crows’, I turn it around to read the blurb, it was about six thieves trying to pull off an impossible heist to save their country. The book seemed like a very interesting read, maybe after Blake was done with the book, I could read after him. In the meantime, I bring out my phone and I open the app I have for books. I go the book I am currently reading, it is murder mystery/ thriller, titled ‘As good as dead’ and it is very interesting and intriguing.

He cares”, he says, and I understand. He actually cares about my safety. I walk fast towards the double doors of the office while we hear guns shooting and men shouting. I lock the doors behind us and press the book on the bookshelf that I know will open the secret door behind the bookstand. The door opens, and we slide inside, and it closes again behind us, and I press the light switch turn it off, and I start guiding spider through the dark tunnels, only using the torches from our phones to get some light.
