He was a strange, mysterious man. Soon, dinner was ready. But when she looked at the food, there was a trace of embarrassment on her face. She'd only made enough for her and her daughter. Still, she said to the little girl, "Go invite him to come eat." The girl walked over and was instantly distracted by the book in Joseph's hands. She tried to get a better look, but she realized she couldn't understand a single word. So, she asked, "What's that book about?" Joseph replied, "It's a book that teaches people how to perform surgery. To put it simply, it's a book about cutting people open."

I found a tattered web-strap chaise lounge, positioned it in the shade, and fell onto it. The comic book was called “They Come Out at Night,” and its cover featured some kind of one-eyed bat-like creature swooping down on a scantily-clad woman. I dove in, reading the story about the monster called Popobawa that had been captured in Africa and shipped to the United States. The ship was wrecked in a storm off the coast of North Carolina, smashing the crate that held the beast. It flew to shore and terrorized a small town. The man drew a combat knife, skewered a piece of fruit, and took a bite. "Follow my lead, or by tomorrow, Mendorra will be minus one Mr. Holt." Layton scoffed. "You think I'm scared? I've got an army of thousands. You're good, but are you 'beat thousands of men' good?" "Wow, that many?" The man feigned shock. "Terrifying!"

"Who are you!" That heavy voice with a very strong aura I felt my body goosebumps and fell unconscious unconscious. Cold, damp, and filled with a dark aura. I very clearly felt it all. I opened my eyes, my eyeballs rolled to look around where I was. My gaze is on a man with an athletic build with crossed legs, he is holding a book covering his face. "Who are you?" I'm a little confused by my own question, which the castle owner should be asking.

He must have sensed something. I hoped that it was just my eyes and ears playing a trick on me and that I haven't been caught right now. There was total silence for seconds and I almost thought I had escaped being seen but that was clearly just a stupid wish because seconds later, the door ripped open and I came face to face with the a man. The man was bare chested, at least from what I had deduced from the upper part of him which I was staring at. And from his face alone, you could tell that he had the surge of power and authority.

He didn’t breathe. Amelia knew that stance the stillness of a predator right before it lunged. “Ryan,” she whispered, her voice barely a breath. His eyes flicked to hers. Just a fraction. Enough. A silent apology passed between them. Then Ryan moved. Fast. He spun and dove for the soldier with a speed Amelia had never seen, both hands reaching for the rifle, slamming into the man with enough force to knock them both backward into the hay. The soldier shouted, “Traitor! Stop!”

“Why do you want to be an EMT?” Tim cleared his throat. “Well, sir, I was a medic in the Army, and I loved it. I’d like to pursue that path in civilian life.” “Honorable discharge?” “Yes sir, a medical separation. I was wounded in Afghanistan.” John leaned back in his chair. “It sounds to me like you weren’t happy about being discharged.” “No, sir, I wasn’t. I’d planned to retire from the Army twenty years from now. But it is what it is.” “I wasn’t either when it happened to me,” the program director confided. “I was in the Marines. And like you, I planned on being a career man. But small arms fire during Desert Storm altered my path.”
