It was the first sign of life I had seen from him all day.
"I’m good," Mark insisted.
"Suit yourself," Jax said. He turned to me. "So, Liam, did you finish that paper for Ethics? The one about the Social Contract?"
I took a bite of my apple. "Almost. I’m stuck on the part about rules. You know, how people follow rules even when they don't want to because they think it keeps things safe."
I said it loudly. I wanted Mark to hear.
"Rules are important," Jax said, leaning back. "But even rules have room for a little bit of fun, right? Like, if the rule is 'Watch the door,' it doesn't say you can't have a conversation while you do it."
