I had a funny moment last week actually, when my cousin from abroad was asking about "authentic" potato houses. The thing is, in a lot of the places I know, a "rumah kentang" isn't some grand architectural landmark. It’s often just a smallholder’s storage hut or a very basic wooden structure in a field, usually built with whatever local material was cheapest and most available—woven bamboo, thatch, maybe some recycled wood. The distinct local touch comes from that. In cooler highland areas, the roofs might be steeper to handle rain and the walls more solid. Near the coast, you might see more raised floors for airflow.

What makes it feel "authentic" to me, honestly, is the context more than the building itself. It’s not a standalone tourist photo-op; it’s part of a working landscape. You see the fields around it, maybe some tools leaning against the wall, and the building looks worn-in, not picturesque. Sometimes the most distinct feature is just the patina of use—mud on the lower planks, faded paint from the sun, that kind of thing.

Trying to pinpoint one definitive style is probably missing the point. It's about practicality and local adaptation, which means they can look quite different even within a single region.
