Rumbling Noise When Driving Novels & Stories

The ride was long and quiet, Crystal didn’t know how long they’ve been this silent, but it was really a pin drop silence. The vehicle’s engine was growling, the vibrations sent by the vehicle in a steady motion was evident. The noise of that engine was the only thing that was currently audible.

Cargo being shipped to its final destination. The rumble starts low, almost lost under the thunder. At first I think it's another storm front moving in. But the sound doesn't fade; it gets stronger, closer, until the van's windows start vibrating. "What the hell is that?" the driver asks. Motorcycles, lots of them, by the sound. The rumble becomes a roar as engines surround us on all sides. Through the rear window, I see headlights cutting through the growing darkness. "Rogues," someone whispers.

The car lunged forward into the evening traffic, the sudden, violent surge of momentum throwing my spine hard against the leather headrest. The silence inside the cabin was suffocating, a heavy, pressurized vacuum broken only by the low, guttural thrum of the engine and the rhythmic clack-clack of the tires passing over the expansion joints of the highway. The city lights blurred into long, smeared streaks of red and white against the glass windows.

"Everyone, stop bickering over trivial things and let me drive and peace," the driver said, scaring the people at he back. The driver is clearly threatening them. He is grasping the steering wheel with his strong hands; it is noticeable as it is audible that it gives the sound of screeching wheels. Stepping on the gas, the luxury car sped up on the car lane, almost bumping into other cars in queue for the toll gates in the other side of the road.

I gripped the edge of my seat with both hands, praying we would not slide off the wet pavement into the deep ravine below us. "Maybe we should pull over and wait for the rain to stop," I suggested, hating how terrified I sounded. "There is no shoulder on this part of the mountain, so we just have to keep moving forward until we find a safe spot," Kurt replied, keeping both hands firmly on the wheel. Another massive flash of lightning lit up the sky, followed instantly by a deafening roar of thunder that vibrated my bones. Just as the thunder faded away, the old car's engine let out a very strange, high-pitched whining noise.

Numerous vehicles were squeezed tightly together in the unbearable length and thickness of the traffic. They appeared like a queue, moving at a snail's pace. The honking of cars was incessant. Some drivers rolled down their windows to see what was happening up ahead, while others were on the verge of losing their temper and violently gripping the steering wheel.

He started the engine as it was loud after all that quiet. “Adam’s gonna be so mad at me,” I said. Saying anything just to remove the awkward silence between us. Roman glanced over at the dried mud splattered up the side of the door, a ghost of a smile touching his lips. “Yeah. Probably.” He backed away as he started to drive out of here. He then looked at me. “Comfy there?” he asked quietly without taking his eyes from the road. “Good shocks on this car; independent front with solid axle in back for better ground contact.”

Sienna The low rumble of the sports car’s engine vibrated through the leather seats, a steady, mechanical hum that matched the relentless drumming of my pulse. Outside the tinted glass, the blurred neon lights of the city streets smeared across the passenger window in long, dizzying streaks of crimson and amber, fading gradually into the pitch-black void of the open highway. The interior of the vehicle was dark, suffocatingly quiet, and thick with a tension so heavy it felt physical, pressing down on my chest until every breath felt like an effort.

At this point the cars are not moving, the road resembling more of a parking lot than an actual road. BOOM. “Was that an earthquake?” Juniper bounces. Jasper rolls down the window for some fresh air. BOOM. “If that were an earthquake,” Marigold explains, “there would be more of a rolling sensation. That was far more staccato.” BOOM. “I wonder what it is though,” Marigold continues. BOOM. “Whatever is making that noise can it just stop?!” Jasper hangs his head all the way out in desperation. "I'm going to vomit."

The shrill engine reverberates through the quiet streets and the mad Lamborghini, like a runaway horse, rampages through the brightly lit streets. Pedestrians and vehicles are dodging. Screeching is all over the streets. Rampaging Lamborghini stops in front of the "Night" bar. His tires screech against the ground. The men and women around are all jumbled with terror.
