Panels of dead holo‑screens hung askew from its sides, some still sputtering half-images. At its crown, a shattered **beacon** flickered sporadically, beams of sickly green and pink light lancing into the polluted sky, then cutting out. The air up here was colder, thinner. The wind knifed through my torn clothes, carrying the tang of ozone and burnt circuitry. Between us and the base of the beacon, the rooftop was… occupied. A massive chimera‑like **drone‑beast** hunched on all fours, its metal body heaving with slow, mechanical breaths.

The team leader looks at his phone and reads the message. The Torso killer will be seen at downstreet, Loki Village- the message shows. "Team, go to the Loki Village and start your search there." The team leader orders through his walkie-talkie. "Are you still trusting that message?" Aaron asked. "You know how helpful this person to our team." He replied. "But you don't know that person." Aaron insists. "But it really happens, all its messages." He debates. "Austin, what will you do if it vanishes some time." Aaron asked.

He didn't see the obsidian-vine uncoiling from the shadow of a nearby ridge. He didn't hear the soft, wet thud of a boot hitting the glass.

They *build*-obsidian altars, fungal reactors, a lattice of roots that hums with the Verse's frequency. Jarek tries to reason with them. They tear off his prosthetic arm and graft it to the lattice. **"They're preparing a beacon,"** Veyd says. **"The Verse will come. Soon."** Ravel loads her gun. "Then we burn it all."
