“It followed me. Or maybe I followed it.” The stone pulsed faintly in Lyra’s palm when she took it. A whisper, like a heartbeat. Lyra’s voice was steady. “You can’t keep this. It’s a beacon.” “I know.” But the girl made no move to take it back. In the morning, word arrived from the scouts. The Blightfields were stirring. Patches of corrupted soil had moved but without the sound or violence of an earthquake. Life around the region had withered. Wolves sent to track the terrain returned mad or didn’t return at all.

Lana’s POV We’d expected the Old Beacon of Lyr to be a ruin, a memory of light; we did not expect the hush that felt like waiting for a tide long past. The Beacon stood on a jut of rock that sliced into the sea, its base worn and hollowed by storms, its top a skeleton of stone. I begin to pull, to take her from the table before it is too late but find myself forced back, shot to the other side of the room where my back hits the wall. "I will free them all!" Her light begins to pulse, sending out waves with Faye at the center. The beacon has been activated, and the call to arms has been sent. As the light fades and Faye falls back onto the table, I rush forward to sweep her into my arms.
