But I recognized it instantly. I froze mid-step. Slowly, I turned my head. Blarke Blackwood stood there under the porch light, rain dripping from his hair, his hand gripping his trousers as if the world had just tilted beneath him. His eyes— those same cold blue eyes I hadn't inherited. They were wide and shaking. “Rylan…?” His voice cracked. The rain fell harder. I didn’t move. No! I couldn't move an inch. He stepped forward, the light behind him throwing his silhouette into the storm.

He looked at the ginger wolf, then at the moon, then back at the wolf. "No," Black whispered, finding courage where there was none. "No, this is impossible. The ritual... the power is supposed to be mine!" I felt the weight of the small knife in my waistband. I didn't think. I didn't plan. I just reacted. I grabbed the handle, pulled it out, and drove it straight into Black’s thigh. He let out a sharp, choked scream. His grip on my arm broke as he stumbled back, clutching his leg. Blood, dark and thick, began to soak through his expensive ritual pants.

Phil exploded, already stepping forward—but Steven immediately blocked his path, standing firmly in front of Gwen. “You’ve gone too far!” Phil snapped, anger flaring despite the warning presence before him. Gwen merely tilted her head, a mocking smile playing on her lips. “It was an accident, Phil.” Her gaze shifted lazily to Belle. “I’m sorry, Belle.” There was no sincerity in her voice. Not even an attempt to hide it. She turned away with a roll of her eyes, as if nothing had happened. Belle remained seated, stunned and dripping, her mind struggling to catch up with the moment.

But it was enough to make the engraved dagger, lying on a ragged rock, glimmer menacingly. "I know the words..." Blake whispered. "He speaks to me. Good job, too. I ain't book smart, and I don't know these strange languages. But I hope you all have strong stomachs. This ritual is gruesome, but," he gave a cold smile, his eyes glowing as if embers burned behind them. "It'll be enjoyable. Just to stab the Captain in the back will be worth the blood."

Wait, they didn't know the big boss husband was right here! I grab my long skirt up a little bit and skip with happy paws straight toward— Wait, is that really the legendary Alpha Blackwynd? The whole obsidian hall feels totally frozen and dead silent. "Well, well. You have a super big mouth, Thorne," Zyric Fenwolf says first, standing right next to Vickon's chair and showing his sharp teeth. "The supreme Alpha of Darkmere Crossing isn't even good enough to touch your boots?" Thorne’s face goes totally white like a ghost. "No—I didn't mean it like that, Elder Malgrin Blackwynd, I swear! I had zero idea this girl was talking about the true Sovereign—"

“A boy and a girl, how fun! What if they’re mates?” “Over my dead body,” Ryatt says dryly, and we both turn as he walks into view. My chest tightens at the sight of him. He’s dressed in all black with his black leather armor covering his chest, forearms, and thighs. Knee-high leather boots and his leather vest gleam in the raw sunlight coming through the shattered window behind us. His hair is tied back away from his face, and his eyes shine like pure silver in the sunlight. All he’s missing is his sword.

That bike was her anchor, the only thing that made sense in a world that chewed people up and spit them out. The wolf beneath her skin stirred, restless. She shoved it down, hard. “Rave!” Her cousin’s voice cut across the lot. Cole Blackthorne swaggered out of the shadows with a beer dangling from his tattooed hand, wearing that trademark smirk that made people either trust him or want to break his nose. “Brooding again?” he teased, nodding at her beer. “You’re turning into a buzzkill. Drink before Reed notices you’re not joining in.” Raven slid off the hood, stretching lazily. “Reed notices everything. That’s the problem.”
