Ryder Blackwood exuded an aura of raw power and controlled intensity. He pulled down an old map—torn at the edges, covered in strange marks. “This town,” he said, pointing to a crooked black symbol near the center, “Ravenwood—it was built on the bones of something ancient. A rift between worlds. A place where the wild things crawl through if the veil thins too much.” Evelynn stared at him. “You mean like… the fire? The monsters?” He nodded. “It doesn’t happen often. Maybe once every hundred years. But when it does, something or someone gets chosen. Marked.”

Through the slightly ajar door, I saw Ryder and a few of the older memebers—Brick, Ghost, and Nails—talking low over a map and a few printed photos. One of them caught my eye: Raven. Another was a location I didn’t recognize. A red “X” was marked over what looked like an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of Ironwood. “That girl....She’s been seen there,” Ryder was saying. “Couple of informants say she’s trying to rebuild. Could just be rumors, but we can’t ignore it.” “You... think she’s planning something?” Brick asked. “She wouldn’t have shown up in broad daylight if she wasn’t. She wants attention. She wants a fight.”

I felt Jace push hard against the bond, his voice slamming inside my skull. The columns converge. I raise my sword. Raven draws hers. A curved Aidion sabre. My sabre. The one I gave her the winter before her exile, with my initials cut into the brass pommel. Twenty yards. Ten. Five. I see her face. Her eyes aren't flat or glowing with cobalt fire. It had the scent of blue posion ivy flowers mixed with blood. Everett was surprised and could feel the scent of Amber from the dagger. “What have you done to Amber? How dare you hurt her!” Everett snapped, very angry and wanting to attack Ruby right now. "Don't worry, I just want to play for a while with my friends." Ruby's dark brown irises turned blood red. A crooked smile was etched on her thin lips.

“Bennett.” I jump so hard I nearly send the bucket of moonpetal water flying across the room. Ryder’s leaning against the door frame, arms folded over his chest, looking like he hasn’t slept more than two hours a night since Monday. Which he probably hasn’t word’s been spreading fast that the missing first year still hasn’t turned up, and the pack’s been running patrols around the clock. “Blackwood,” I mumble, turning back to stirring my bowl. The petals are supposed to turn deep blue when you’ve got a handle on your focus. Mine are stuck somewhere between purple and grey. “What do you want?”
