My jaw is slightly parted as he returns to my side and opens the book. Part of me is surprised that he pulled out a romance, I haven’t read the book myself, but Kehlani thought it was at least decent or she wouldn’t have kept it. The other part of me things he picked it out as a joke but as his dark eyes follow along the page, it can’t be just a joke. I play Wordscapes on my phone until I hear a small laugh next to me, forcing me to look up at Ryker. “The characters are so immature, and not in a good way,” he closes the book.

My voice did not shake. The man tilted his head. He didn't have a face, just a shifting darkness where his features should be. "You can call me the Reader," he said. His voice sounded like paper rubbing together. "I am the one who pays for the ink. I am the one who decides if your story ends here or keeps going." Bryan stepped in front of me, his hand on his pistol. "He’s another code, Hazel. Don’t listen to him." The Reader laughed. It was a dry, thin sound. "A copy thinks he has a choice. How cute."

I hate how wet I get just reading his orders. My fingers move slowly, torturously slowly. Slick sounds fill the quiet garden air. I bite my lip hard. “So wet…” I type. “Throbbing for a stranger…” I don’t finish the sentence. Another message pings. “Stop touching. Edge only. Hold it right there. Damn. She reads this?” he nods towards Rose. “Gwynn got her into them.” I feel my heart rate pick up. How bad could it be really? According to Rose, she has been reading this stuff the last couple of years. “Feisty old Gwynn.” Ryder laughs. “I always liked her.” “I’ll summarise, shall I?” Jackson scrubs the back of his neck and the fucker’s cheeks actually turn a light shade of pink. I don’t think I’m going to like this. Not one bit. What the hell did Gwynn let her read?

His attention went back to the screen and I turned mine to his book shelf to look for something to read. Vampires. Werewolfs. Romance. Teen Fiction. Mystery. Thriller. Historical. He's got a lot of books. Xavier's POV I looked at Royalty as she looked through my bookshelf for something to read. I knew girls rather shop than read and I found it quite interesting for a girl to be a bookworm. I was feeling something for her but I couldn't put my finger on it. I was slowly starting to enjoy being around her. I got up without making a sound.
