He stared at it and for a second, I thought he would reject it. He let out a sigh, taking it from me and I broke into a grin. “Don't even think this gets you off the hook!” He stated, taking a bite. “Your mom cooks so well I could practically move in with her,” Evander muttered in between devouring the pie. “Do you cook as good as she does?”

She knew how proud mom was of her ribs and this was sure to get her thinking about that. Of course, Mom rose to the bait. "Well, you can't make them better than me!" She bounced up and dashed to the grill, spreading her hands out to block anyone else's access. Ada put her arm around my shoulder and led me inside. That was a perfect plan for us to gossip alone and formulate our anti-Lily strategy.

He cast an awkward look at her and felt like she was seeing right through him. Scratching his head to disguise his discomfort, Ryder said, "Sorry, Ms. Brown, I—" Faye chuckled. "No worries, Mr. Ryder. I suppose you've been running around all day because of what happened to my mother, right?" Without saying anything, Ryder's face revealed a trace of weariness. He sighed and lowered his head, completely losing his appetite.
