I say, turning away but leaving my door open. I hear her knock as softly as she possibly can. “Meadow?” she calls, her voice barely above a whisper. I shake my head and go to my suitcase that I never unpacked yesterday. I grab my sparring clothes which consist of spandex boy shorts, and a basic spandex sports bra. I don’t bother with shoes. I don’t use them when I spar. No one in my family or any of the Guardian families do.

He's on me before I can regain my footing, his fists raining down in relentless blows. Face, chest, ribs—each blow is a dull, jarring thud that rattles through bone.
