She placed the leather-bound book on her lap with reverence, brushing away the lingering dust with her trembling fingers. The book creaked open like it hadn’t been touched in years. Its pages were yellowed and fragile, but tucked between random paragraphs were faint markings—notes written in delicate, slanted handwriting. Leah’s heart thudded as she scanned the lines, searching for meaning. On the third chapter, Sofia’s voice came alive. “Nothing is ever truly what it seems. A beautiful prison is still a prison.” Leah’s brows furrowed. She flipped another page. More underlines, this time around a quote from the book’s protagonist:

In novels, the female protagonist would meet a better man after leaving the male protagonist. Then, a new chapter of her life would begin. However, reality wasn't the same as novels. It would only turn out to be worse. If that were the case, she didn't want to put up an act anymore. It didn’t say anything about the animals or people of that land. The way he cooked on Saturday afternoons and believed, without sentimentality, that paying full attention to the small things was the substance of a life.” I paused. “It’s also a book about what happened to him. What was constructed and deployed against him by people who found him threatening and found it convenient to remove him. W

I whisper. Gavin chuckles, rubbing my back some more. "No, we didn't baby. I didn't want anything getting in the way of me and you." I hesitate again. Well, here goes nothing. "I'm not on birth control." I whisper in a voice so low, I almost don't hear myself. Gavin heard me though. He goes tense under me and he stops rubbing my back. I wait for what feels like an eternity, waiting for him to say something, anything. When he doesn't I feel my eyes start to water.
