Then she presses small treats to my tongue, bitter first, then sweet, sour, and savory, observing my reactions carefully.
She has me follow her fingers with my eyes, squeeze her hands, push against her palms. She checks my reflexes and she also has me turn my head a couple of times.
When she finds nothing out of place, she pulls away from me.
“Let’s scan your head,” she says. “Just in case there’s something subtle I might be missing.”
I nod, even though my stomach turns from anxiety. After the scan, I return to her office and place the results into her hands. My fingers hesitate before letting go.
