The next three days were horrible. All of the teenagers had to get three kinds of scans, an MRI, a CT, and a PET scan. Because they are short on equipment, we all had to wait for a long time. Nancy and I tried to keep ourselves busy with the board games, but after one day we were already done with them.

The guards caught her arms, forcing her back to her knees. "Hold her," Richard commanded. He walked to the center of the hall, standing directly behind me. I could feel the heat coming off his body. The smell of cedar and rain. "Do it, Joshua." I stepped forward. Bianca thrashed. She spat at my boots. "Stay still." I grabbed her wrist. Her skin was clammy. I pressed the scanner’s needle-tip against her thumb.

"General, with all due respect, how can we be certain these scans are reliable? Have the tests been verified?" O'Malley’s gaze swept the room, his demeanor cool and composed. "These scans were conducted by multiple high-tech industries and government agencies. The results were the same across all platforms. Every source we consulted confirmed that after 1,000 feet, our scanners encountered nothing but a black void. We used different methods, recalibrated the equipment, and tried everything. Same result." Danial felt a cold pit forming in his stomach. A thousand feet into the ruins, and then… nothing? That shouldn’t be possible.

“It’ll be a little bit cold, sorry.” “Second,” Kate winced as the frigid jelly connecting with the sensitive skin of her stomach. “We had a dating scan a few weeks ago.” The screen beside them illuminated, a black and white grainy image covering the entirety of the screen, a blur that Kate didn’t have the foggiest idea how to read. The sonographer’s mouth opened, a soft nod rustling his sandy hair as his eyes turned to the screen. He tapped a button, a wide grin breaking out across his kindly face. “Well, hello.”

Sasha shakes her head as she says, "Would you be able to run some sort of test, to find out if a female is pregnant?" Rune looks from me to Sasha as he says. "Oh my, this would truly be a miracle. I would run the female through the body scanner, and we would have an answer." Sasha asks, "Is it dangerous for the baby?" Rune smiles as he says, "No, our scanners only use holographic images; it is completely safe for the baby." "Okay, let's do it," Sasha replies with a smile. Rune looks at Sasha as he says. "Okay Sasha, let's get you into the scanner then."

She looked so helpless, like a delicate little flower. I watched them silently, a mocking smile tugging at the corner of my lips as they played their little act in front of me. Ryan, irritated, glanced at me before turning back to Miranda. "Susan, you don't understand. Miranda's health is fragile. I'm just trying to—" I interrupted him sharply, "If she's sick, take her to a doctor. And Ryan, we're already broken up. You don't need to explain anything to me." Ryan's expression darkened. "Susan, do you really think I won't break up with you?"

ASHER'S POV I have never been more excited than right now in the hospital room with Nicole, the doctor is watching the monitor and I can see a weird strange movement on the monitor but I can't make out the image but knowing that the steady heartbeat we are hearing and the image on the monitor belongs to my daughter or son is the most fulfilling thing ever and it's so fucking exciting. I looked at Nicole and she is spotting a huge smile that is similar to mine, I am so excited.
