Her hair was now completely on fire and a scythe appeared in her hand. Scarlet let out the darkness for the first time in a long time. It burned Coraline. She let out a cry falling on her hands and knees. "That was for Roman. You betrayed him more than all of us. Now your little sick, twisted plan is failing." The chains extended from Scarlet's hand. The darkness danced along the length of it, as they slowly wrapped around Coraline's neck. "No, please don't do this Scar." Coraline pleaded, doing a spell to look like Selina again.

*** Aurora I found myself in a drowsy state, one that seemed like a dream but held the gravity of reality. Someone was manipulating my leg, firmly restraining it, and I felt the sensation of cuffs closing around my legs. My left hand was elevated and secured, and as I fought against it, the hopelessness of my efforts became clear. Seraphina's POV “That bitch!” I screamed the moment I got back to the room I was staying in at the Sinclair mansion. My breathing turned erratic as my mind replayed my encounter with Scarlett in the hallway over and over again. I could have sworn she had just come out of Xavier’s room. I had spent so long trying to deny my suspicions about the two of them, but what I saw tonight finally made all the scattered pieces connect together in my head. They were far too close.

"Audrey, our engagement is off! From now on, we're done!" My mom stared at him for a long moment before it finally dawned on her. "No! That's not right! I must have picked the wrong person! You're not the second male lead at all... You're just a pathetic lapdog! How could a lapdog make the male lead feel threatened?" With that, she stumbled out of the wedding ceremony in a daze. "It's not too late yet. I need to find Connor!"

She ran from there to a silent corner. “Sweetheart?” Dante turned toward her immediately, his brows furrowing when he saw her sit down on the chair, burying her face in her hands. Her shoulders shook as quiet sobs escaped her, and in that moment, she looked no different than Amy when she got scolded for hurting her cousins. Except Scarlet hadn’t done anything wrong. Dante stepped forward. His eyes narrowed on Julian who followed as well, his voice low and cold. “You just made the biggest mistake of your life.”

She was still cuffed, but at least her warders had stopped paying attention to her—for the moment. Scarlet saw her chance. She turned and nudged Ruth with her foot; Ruth, still sitting loyally by her side, seemed to understand, to pick up on the signal. Scarlet nodded, and at the same time, the two of them turned and took off, running away from the crowd, back up the steps, back up the narrow alleyway. They ran back up flight after flight, Scarlet running awkwardly with her wrists chained in front of her. She glanced back over her shoulder, but saw nobody coming her way. They were all still staring at the shield, still transfixed.

The four of us held each other close as the music swelled again, as if the night itself was wrapping us in a cocoon of magic. We danced. We laughed. We drank champagne—well, sparkling apple juice for the kids—and toasted to a future that finally felt like it belonged to us. *** But in the shadows… Beyond the gleam of rooftop lights and glittering champagne flutes… She watched.
