Rose’s POV The morgue smelled like industrial bleach and something sweet, the kind of sweetness that makes you want to gag because you know it's hiding the scent of rot. My hands were shoved deep into the pockets of my coat, my fingers digging into my own palms just to stay grounded. Every time a metal drawer clicked or a cooling fan hummed, I jumped. Silas was standing over Jacob, the lab tech. Silas didn’t have to scream, he just stood there, his shadow stretching across the white tile floor like a stain.

“Do you know why? Because she doesn’t drain me. She feeds me. Just as I feed her. We are symbiosis. We are balance. We are what the books never predicted.” “The Council… the Council will want to know about this…” “The Council will find out soon enough.” I tilted my head. “And it will learn.” I extended my hand to the side, and the air tore open in violet and silver. My black scythe slid out of the pocket dimension, the ebony handle fitting perfectly in my palm. The curved blade gleamed, ancient runes pulsing in shades of violet. The leader looked at the scythe. Then at me. “That is… a scythe of death…”

Yvette stood, blood smearing across her fingertips. She turned to Cara and Tristan. “I know what to do.” --- Back at the safehouse, things had worsened. The sky had turned a shade of violet that didn’t belong in nature. Shadows flickered along walls even in full light. The house’s clock spun in reverse, and every time Cara blinked, she heard music no one else could. Yvette laid out the pieces of the broken vault mirror. One by one, she aligned them into a circle. Tristan placed his knife in the center.

“Writing lies. Stirring chaos. Making me your headline.” “I didn’t—” My words broke into a gasp when his fingers brushed higher, so close I thought I’d come undone on the spot. “Don’t lie to me,” he warned. When he drew back, I thought I’d beg without meaning to, but instead he reached behind the couch. A cane—slender, polished, gleaming under the city lights—appeared in his grip. He didn’t strike me. He only let it glide along the bare skin of my thigh, tracing dangerous lines, making every nerve ending scream in anticipation.

“Not only that, but we have already discovered that you and your family are being targeted by them. Up to this point, we haven’t found out their true purpose, but I think we will find out soon enough. We just need to put together all the pieces. So far, we have, freaky werewolves who have been experimented on, a scientist who is being targeted, Natalie stealing your identity and she is the daughter of the leader, and as for your mother, I don’t know how she fits into the mix.” A slow smile spread across my lips, and I felt a strange connection with Jayden in this moment. Kyle grinned, leaned in, and sank his beautiful ecstatic fangs, growing and growing, into her throat. It was the greatest feeling of his life. The woman screamed as he drank her blood, gorging himself until she fell limp in his arms. Kyle rose to his feet, satisfied, and turned and surveyed the empty highway. He straightened his collar, smoothed his shirt, and took the first step. There was a lot of payback coming this town’s way—and it would all start with Scarlet.

The faster the tornado spun, the thinner her slender frame became. "No, leave her alone," I yelled, my voice hoarse, pushing my hand through the deadly tornado. Before I could grab her, Liam appeared and shoved me out of the way. I slammed into the wall, collapsing to my knees. Sasha was skin and bones by this point, resembling the female corpses discovered at the lake. When he grabbed her, her frail body disintegrated into ashes, spinning around in the chaos until she was gone.

After the boys had left my room, I went through my bag and pulled out my favorite book, Night Flame, by Catherine Hart. I sat back in my chair by the window, prepared to spend the rest of the afternoon reading when a shiver ran down my spine. I jumped out of my seat and spun around to see a pair of yellow eyes glowing in the corner of the room. As those eyes drew closer to me, I realized that it was Simon, the fae that came to warn me the other day.
