She hesitated, and I knew she was hiding something.
Finally, she said, “My mom.” It was a lie.
Not a very good one.
Freya wasn’t good at lying—her voice softened when she fibbed, as if she was gently cushioning the truth.
But I didn’t call her out.
Instead, I nodded. “How was your night?”
“Good, I slept well.”
That was another lie.
Her eyes were tired, with dark circles underneath. She must have spent the night waking every few minutes, checking if I was breathing.
