At the center of it all, Seraphine stood with Isla clutched tight in her arms. Her cloak swirled around her like living smoke, her eyes glowing red as fire. Her voice rose in a chant, the words sharp and harsh, twisting the air. The red glow beneath her feet grew brighter, reaching for the child in her arms.

His hand flew to his chest, clutching the surge of energy that suddenly burned through his core like molten fire. No. Not fire. Power. He looked up and froze. A soft golden light pulsed from Selena's chest. Faint at first, then brighter. Radiating outward in slow waves like a heartbeat long suppressed. The mark. The seal.
