Watching television had not quite worked out for Mercy either time that she had tried it, so she decided to spend her day reading a book. Luna Isabella had recommended something called Little Women to her, which she said was a classic, and so far, Mercy was enjoying it. She’d curled up in the window seat in the bedroom she’d been sleeping in. Outside, fall leaves fluttered from the trees, spreading a blanket of color all over the velvety lawn. Mercy’s eyes kept wandering away from the words, even though she did like the book. Once her eyes strayed from the words, they quickly slipped to August.

she said with some annoyance. "Cassarina, you'll know the book I'm talking about once you see it. Just open your eyes," the woman said. Cassarina stared at the old woman who had come to be her mentor and teacher in her black robe. She sighed and got back to work. As she checked the middle of the shelf, a certain book struck her observation. It had the title The Kingdom Itself: Snails on it. "That's a strange name for a kids' story," she whispered but bypassed it and continued the search.

She reached over the stacks with a scraggy hand and picked up a plain-covered book, handing it to Adea. Adea flipped it over to look at the spine, which showed the title, Pride and Prejudice. “Oh, no thank you,” Adea said with a kind smile as she handed the book back. “I don’t do much reading. My sister on the other hand-” She made a gesture toward Lyda, who was still flipping through the pages of one of the thickest books Adea had ever seen. “Ah!” the old woman exclaimed. “Fascinated by religious texts, my dear?”

“Hey… about what you saw earlier.” She jumped, clutching the book to her chest. “I—I didn’t see anything. I swear. I won’t tell anyone.” I smiled softly and stepped even closer, backing her gently against the shelves. “Relax. Professor Harlan and I… we have an understanding. But I saw how you looked at us. You didn’t run away because you were scared. You ran because it turned you on, didn’t it?” Her cheeks burned brighter. She shook her head quickly. “No… that’s not… I’m not—”

“unlucky contestants…shelf two, book thirteen.” It sounded oddly like a personal note. My curiosity won out and I skimmed my fingers along the spines of the books until I chose one at random. I pulled out a medium-sized book, a deep shade of navy blue. Earthen twine was wrapped around the book, and there was a picture on the front. A middle-aged man with chocolate hair and dark eyes smiled up at me. The cover of the book read, “Arthur Zimmerman, Game 71.

she said to herself. The fourth book begins at chapter 1 in Paris. The End.

On the other side of the room, a bookshelf sat in the corner, displaying an assortment of well-arranged books and a few files. In general, the room felt cozy and peaceful. It was just... "Wow! " Christiana exclaimed in awe. She headed to the bookshelf. Her eyes scanned the books and finally landed on a novel. Christian's eyes lit in excitement and she took it. It was one of her favorite novels; VERITY BY COLLEN HOOVER.
