Now it was real. The knock was soft, almost polite. Marcus opened the door. Julian stood in the hallway, rain droplets clinging to his leather jacket. He was taller than his photos—six-two to Marcus’s six feet, with a swimmer’s build and eyes the color of burnt honey. His smile was slow, predatory, and the moment he stepped inside, his gaze locked onto Leo like a wolf spotting a meal. “Marcus,” Julian said, tossing his jacket aside. He closed the distance between him and Leo, not to shake his hand, but to grab a thick fistful of Leo’s hair and yank his head back. “And you must be the toy.”

Leo swung the glowing drive like a weapon, the heat searing Julian’s skin. "I was supposed to be the one!" Leo cried, his voice breaking. "I was the one who stayed! I was the one who studied! You were just the spoiled heir!" Julian pinned Leo’s arm to the floor, his eyes locked onto his brother’s. "You were the one who was lied to, Leo. Just like I was. She trailed her gaze toward me. “Don’t bother about that, Phil. My daughter is just overly honest. I’ll serve the food.” She rose from her seat and served Julius first. “Is that enough?” He looked at her with a grin. “This could feed two of me.”

Merlin and Julia turned to me, they had more beers than I did. “She just swore? What could possibly make her swear?” Merlin whispered to Julia. They were drunk out of their minds. “Oh no no Julia you have to pick Selanene up from school,” I shook her shoulders as I reminded her. Her eyes widened in realization. “Who’s Selanene?” Merlin asked. I wasn’t drunk, nor close to being drunk. Once I remembered Selanene my eyes cleared out. “Ela- Isadora’s daughter,” Julia said. She almost exposed me but luckily she was still a bit conscious of it.
