Chapter Seven Cairos’s POV The Sky Gardens were one of the few places in the Underworld where people could still forget about the world that had ended around them. Artificial filled the enormous glass dome above us, casting a warm glow over the gardens while streams of clear water moved between the rocks and strange flowers grew along the walking paths. For a place built beneath a ruined world, it looked almost peaceful. Zuri had been enjoying every second of it. She moved from one flower to another, asking questions and pulling me toward anything that caught her attention, while I followed behind her and allowed her to enjoy the day.

They all stood as Balthazar, and I stood together. "I will see all of you soon. Take care, and our home will always be open to you." "We love you, Imelda." My mother said. I gave her a tight smile before the black smoke and fire consumed us. I gripped Balthazar's hand as the night sky swirled around us. Our feet making contact with solid ground once again. When we arrived in the underworld, I was unsure what to expect, but it wasn't anything like this. The underworld wasn't rocks and everlasting flames or filled with the cries and screams of the dead. No, it was a vast city, lights, music and tall buildings reaching up the sky. It was something of a dream, something I had never seen before.

To our left, ancient olive trees stood like gnarled sentinels and their leaves seemed to reflect the silvery moonlight. We got closer to the gates and Miguel slowed his pace. He didn't look at me, his gaze was fixed on the security cameras nestled in the stone pillars ahead and his voice took on different weight. "Forget everything you think you know about street thugs and back-alley deals, Alejandro," Miguel said softly. I could not help but process what he must have meant by that. Instinctively my own pace slowed. "The men behind these gates don't call themselves 'Mafia.' They are the Guardiani del Codice—the Guardians of the Code."

Laila says, conjuring a pen and paper from thin air, “the God of Death and the Goddess of Life won a great victory against their father, the God of Darkness. They wrenched half of the planet away and made it their own Kingdom, the Underworld.” Laila draws a circle on the paper to represent a planet and draws a line clean through it. “This is the Underworld,” she continues, tapping her pen on one of the hemispheres and then gesturing to the wasteland around us to indicate that they’re the same. “But beneath it is the Deadlands.” Inside the little hemisphere that Laila has indicated is the Underworld, she draws a smaller circle, just below the surface.
