After a tense silence, Thomas finally sounded utterly defeated. “That’s enough! Stop! The rescue team is already on the way! “Just… go around, don’t come this way.” I exhaled sharply and yanked the wheel, turning the car around. I had gambled right. However, moments of relief were immediately replaced by a wave of heat even stronger than before. Smoke burned in my lungs, and all I could hear was the relentless crackling of the fire. I fought to control the car, spinning through flames and smoke, gripping the wheel with every ounce of strength.

Bells jingled, and a young woman behind the counter gave me a nod before turning back to her book. I didn’t know what I was looking for. Maybe something to help me understand Aaron. The hum drops, then settles like a sulky child, and Timo mirrors her on the other side so the seam forgets its name. We move downstream six paces, repeat. Upstream, and repeat. Backpocket tricks make circles clumsy and we make clumsy things fall apart.

Outside, the wind howled, the window rattled. She hated how empty her space felt without his voice—even if it was just a growl in her ear. She hated that someone else—Fox—was starting to sound like him. Or worse… that they were blending together in her head. Part V – A Story Posted Too Soon That night, she logged in to her story-sharing site, the one where Domica whispered fantasies for her followers to devour. She hadn’t posted in weeks. Until now. She uploaded one called: “The Fox and the Fire.”

I’d always loved him. “You should feel her squirming under me, Gio. She’s soft. I can see why…” The fingers of my free hand touched something cold. A metal fork. I would have preferred a knife, but I would work with what I had to hand. Closing my hand around it, I let out an ear-piercing scream. Swinging my whole body, I sank the prongs of the silver fork into his eye. There was no pop as his eyeball exploded or maybe there was, but if so it was drowned out by the sound of his roaring.

“It’s fox fire poison you idiots. She’s being cooked from the inside out. Ice outside her body does nothing.” “Yes sir.” “Focus on where the poison entered her body.” “Yes sir. “Heal the girl properly or I will find better healers!” “Fox fire poison?” I turned to Nok, “What’s that?” “It’s the poison that wounded our father.” Nok spoke low making sure not to disturb the healers. “It’s very rare and depending on where you’re hurt it can take hours or months to kill you.” “It’s treatable though?” I wasn’t sure if I was reassuring myself or looking for validation on what I had just done.

“A story?” “Yeah! The fox one.” He reached toward the small stack of books on his bedside table. “Mommy always reads it!” My throat tightened. I forced a small smile and took the book. “Alright. The fox it is.” The pages felt rough beneath my fingertips. I cleared my throat and began. “Once upon a time, there was a fox who lived—” Aaron frowned, tilting his head. “You sound weird.” I blinked. “Weird?” “Your voice is funny.”

There were chapters about mind links, healing powers, even wolves that could talk to animals… but not a single word about silver fire. Or glowing fingers. Or dreams about strange women with snow-white hair. I let out a long breath, the kind that made your shoulders sag. I felt tired. Like the answers I wanted were still too far away.

Then—an explosion. The fire surged, twisting unnaturally, moving with purpose, as though it were alive. A wave of heat slammed into me. I turned my body, shielding the child as I rolled out of the way, the flames licking at my back. Pain flared, sharp and searing. My wolf howled in agony, but I clenched my teeth. I could heal.
