There was something steady in his gaze, something quiet but certain.
He met her eyes and said, “Would you like to have dinner with me on Saturday?” A pause, just long enough for her heart to trip.
“A real date,” he added, his voice softer then. “Just us.” Her breath hitched. A blush rose before she could catch it, but her smile came easily.
“Yes,” she said, barely above a whisper. “I’d like that.”
Back in the present, Ave checked the time again. Just under two hours to go. Christine held up a gold hoop earring in one hand and a delicate chain in the other. “Hoops or subtle?”
