The spray-painted words stared back at them like a curse.
That night, after Mia and Sophia had gone to bed, Jake and Emma stood on the repaired section of the porch, staring at the lake. The air was cool, the water calm, but tension hummed between them.
“I almost lost you today,” Emma whispered, turning to him.
