We were sitting at the kitchen island, the remains of breakfast pushed aside for a mountain of paint chips and furniture catalogs. "They look exactly the same," I pointed out, tapping the two pink squares. "They are fundamentally different," Aria corrected, biting her lip in concentration. "Blush has cool undertones. Petal is warm. The lighting in the guest room—I mean, the nursery—is eastern facing, so we need..." She trailed off, her brow furrowing.

Lauren glanced fearfully over her shoulder then, as if just the thought of Miranda would summon her. Miranda wasn’t there, but Jake was crouched next to her. He didn’t seem to be the least bit bothered by the fact that Lauren had gotten sick in front of him. She hoped he wouldn’t tell his friends about it later. “Can you stand?” he asked. She nodded again and dug her hands into her thighs as she pushed up. Everything swam before her for a second, including Jake’s blue eyes (they really are very blue, she thought, dark blue, like sapphires) and then the world righted itself. Now to get away as soon as possible.

I log into my job's attendance app and request a personal day. After I shower, I look into my eyes. The longer I stare, the darker the mirror becomes. Inside, I see several black shadows standing beside me. I turn to face them, but nothing's there. Back facing the mirror, they become one and move directly behind me. Once they're no longer visible, I gaze deep into my soul. My dark brown pupils appear black. The longer I stare, the more I see this blue hue. It's a lovely shade of extra dark blue, outlining the brown.

My eyes landed on Mete instead. I focused hard, squinting until the world began to blur at the edges. Slowly, the colors began to surface around him. A murky gray drizzled with a sickly tint of green appeared first. Then, an electric blue cloud faintly shimmered above his head like a storm waiting to break. “Oh, an interesting one,” Pareia remarked. The colors grew more vivid for a brief moment before they flickered out of view. “Not bad for a first time,” she added.

Her name is Kara Blue, I watched her turn fifteen years, she loved to skate and also run away... You might wonder from what?... Her fingers opened slowly, almost unconsciously holding her breath. The moment the lid lifted—the candlelight caught on the crystal inside, scattering a soft, mesmerizing glow. An oval-cut pendant, clean and precise, glowed in a deep shade of blue. Not a bright, striking blue—but something calmer, like the surface of the sea as night begins to fall. Within it, the crystal caught the light in soft reflections, as if there were layers of quiet radiance living inside. It wasn’t flashy, not overly dazzling—and that was exactly what made it look so expensive.

It felt the safest place to be. The sky was a deep shade of almost a deep blue-purple color, lit up by the gentle glow of the moon.
