The realization hit me like a tidal wave; the safe harbor I had sought was nothing more than yet another trap.
Adrian’s grip on the gun tightened, his knuckles whitening.
He cocked the weapon, and the sudden click made everyone flinch, even Dr. Collins, stepped back instinctively.
James recoiled into the car, his face a mask of terror.
“They?” Adrian’s voice was low, a barely contained growl.
“Who are they?”
James’s entire body trembled as he glanced up at Adrian fearfully, his eyes wide with fear.
“Please, don’t shoot,” he begged, his voice cracking.
