Dupree, with his rune-infused blade, fended off the Shadows, each strike causing them to momentarily dissipate. Seraphina and I focused on the chest, attempting to harness its energy. As we channeled our combined powers, the chest began to glow brighter, emitting a frequency that seemed to disorient the Shadows. Moros, seizing the opportunity, shouted, "Now! Push them back!" With a collective effort, we unleashed a wave of energy, forcing the Shadows to retreat. But just as victory seemed within grasp, the ground trembled beneath us, and from the abyss, a colossal Shadow emerged, its presence dwarfing the others.

One moment she was powerless, the bond being stripped away piece by piece. The next, her wolf rose up inside her like a tidal wave. Like a dam breaking. Stronger than ever before. Wild. Ancient. For three heartbeats, Lyra felt power she'd never experienced. Power she'd never even imagined. Power that made the air around her shimmer and ripple. The strange man sighed and folded his hands behind him. "My name is Xavier",he said and bowed his head a little at her. "And I'm a Shade" Layla frowned. A Shade? What did he mean? "Shadow warrior",Xavier said when he noticed the confusion in her eyes. "I'm a Shadow warrior, from the bloodline of the Ancient Shades. Shades are rare creatures who have the ability to become invisible, manipulate shadows and travel through time and space. Even into people's dreams" Layla's eyes flashed. So that's how he was able to get into her dreams, she thought.

One swift, it flew in our direction. I dodged the tree, but it didn’t fall on us. Zarah countered Dayana’s force and hurled the tree away. I’d never seen a hybrid lycan shift. Hearing my guys gasp, I turned to Shadow, now in her hybrid form. It was something I didn’t see every day. She was terrifying, but at the same time, I was proud to call her my friend. She ran faster in Dayana’s direction while she was distracted by Zarah. I shifted and followed her, too, but Shadow had already thrown her away before she could come close to Dayana. They were all forces to be reckoned with.

A low sound escaped him, but he still didn’t fold. Aaron leaned in close. Too close. His voice dropped. “You think I don’t see what you’re doing?” he said. “You stand there like you’re above it. Like nothing touches you.” Cole’s eyes didn’t move away. “Because I don’t let it.” That answer made something darker flicker in Aaron’s face. He shoved him again. Harder this time. Cole’s breath finally broke for a second. But he still didn’t push back. Aaron’s grip tightened again, pulling him slightly forward before slamming him back once more.

The shadows on the far side of the hall began to shift. To gather. To grow. Lucian lifted a hand, his aura surging. “Show yourselves.” A dark figure peeled out of the shadows like smoke coming alive. Its face was hidden. Its presence was wrong. Another stepped out behind it. And another. Three. Four. Five. All cloaked in shifting black, no scent, no heartbeat, no emotion. The Shadow Faction. The lead one tilted its head, eyes glowing silver. “You cannot hide the girl,” it said. Fia whimpered and pressed herself against me.

I was launched backward, flying toward the closing portal of the farmhouse door.

Pretending exhaustion, I dropped my guard for a crucial second. He took the bait and lunged. I spun inside his reach and drove my palm into his chest, releasing a concentrated burst of Shadowborn magic directly into his heart. Not enough to stop it. Just enough to make it stutter. He collapsed, gasping. The three I had knocked back initially were recovering. One shifted into wolf form and charged. I met him with a wall of silver flames. He hit it and yelped, backing away.
