Two shadows stood by the window, away from the light so they were covered by the shadows. A man, tall and lean, his face hidden beneath a long silver cloak. And a woman fully cloaked. “She’s growing too bold,” the man whispered, his voice sharp like a blade. “The Moonborn thinks herself untouchable now.”

She slid in. I stopped at the corner and counted my breaths to ten. The alley bent once around flattened boxes. I didn’t follow. I didn’t need to. I heard it, faint and unmistakable—the low mechanical hum of the steel door pulling air, like a lung on the other side of brick. shadow, I wrote, and added a dot. The dot felt like the scream Marco had told me to send. Copy, came the reply. Then: Inside honey planted. Watching.

There was a certain sexy charm in every gesture he made. “Did he just hang up on me?” he asked, pointing at himself in disbelief. “Yes,” a shadow replied plainly. “Ah, great. Just great.” “You should know by now how he does things,” the shadow said. “Damn it… he can be very vexing at times,” the man sighed forlornly. “I thought we would use this opportunity to catch up.”

Black robes and a hood hid the persons features as it shifted from shadow to shadow, silent like a phantom. Not even a white foggy breath disturbed the dark of the night.

What Tador and the others termed as a shadowed man, wasn’t really a shadowed man, but a being made of a pile of thick black smoke like a man. Now the only thing that danced in Tador’s mind was how the hell he would get out of the scary dream he was in.

You are long gone.” Aaron grunted at the appearance of his shadow. “Huh, I am here because you want me here.” the shadow chuckled. “I don’t need you; go away, I am fine.” Aaron dodged the shadow and tried to reach the wall. The shadow laughed at him, “You are not fine mentally anytime. You learn to hide your sufferings, you evolved.” “Yes, I am now. I don’t need you, go away.”

A man’s shadow is his anchor; it is the proof that he occupies space, that he is a solid entity in a world of light. Without it, I felt like a ghost haunting my own body. Every step I took across the violet dunes felt weightless, as if the gravity of the earth were a suggestion I was no longer inclined to follow.
