Then the shadows crept in through the windows all around us, thin dark tendrils sliding across the floor like they had a mind of their own, reaching for the walls, for the doors, reaching straight for us.
"Ethan, look out!" Freya shouted, grabbing my arm and pulling me back a step.
I spun around just in time to see one of the tendrils move toward the desk where the phone still sat, dead and silent. It shattered the second the shadow touched it, black smoke rising from the broken pieces like something was laughing at us.
"They knew," Freya said, moving toward the door, her eyes wide with fear. "They knew we were about to find out the truth, and they cut her off before she could tell us."
