She looks down, and that is when she notices her scars and cuts are in full view. Panic takes over her face, and she yanks at the tee to cover them back up, and then her eyes meet mine again. The voice cuts through me so sharply I physically flinch. My hands press flat against Leo’s chest as my head snaps up, breath coming faster now. No, that’s not how it was before. It was calm. My stomach twists. “Did you hear that?” I whisper, as if speaking too loudly might make it worse. Leo’s eyes narrow slightly. “Hear what?” Right. Of course. I shake my head, but it doesn’t help. Because it’s still there. “It should have been finished.” A pulse of something dark and heavy rolls through me, stronger this time, and the air in the room seems to shift with it. The lamp beside us flickers violently, then shatters. Glass scatters across the floor in a sharp, echoing crash.

The demon in me hoped she didn’t. That she was burning too. At dawn, I was back on duty. Transparent. Professional. A statue in a black suit standing watch in the entrance hall. I try again to mind link him with no answer. I hear footsteps down the hall coming towards my door. I quickly stand as tall as possible, which is hard because I am so tired and my legs barely hold me up anymore. I have to though; I refuse to show him any sign of weakness. The door opens and in walks Shane, his signature smirk and a rose.
