Chapter Ninety Six: Peace The room was quiet, the hum of the evening outside barely heard through the windows. Rachel sat on the bed, pulled her knees up close to her chest, and looked down at her hands. It had been an emotional day in surges which would leave one drained and still feel lighter than it had in weeks. She had heard Noah's words, taken the weight of his forgiveness, and finally-finally-allowed herself to believe that moving on was possible.

But I ruined it. Again. And now I’m here. Alone. In my damn office. Drenched in moonlight and whiskey fumes. Surrounded by broken bottles and broken promises. Another crash. The crystal shatters against the wall, amber liquid dripping like blood down the paint. I don’t even flinch. My body’s still buzzing from her. My head’s still filled with the sound of her breath, her whimpers, the way she said my name like she hated herself for wanting it.

The fire swallowed everything—stone, steel, even sound—until all I could hear was the relentless thunder of the shard in my chest. My body shook as flames licked along my arms, spilling into the air like serpents freed from chains. For a heartbeat, I saw nothing but ruin stretched before me: Damian lying broken in the ash, Marcus’s blood staining the earth, Angela’s eyes dimming into silence. The shard promised victory if I gave it what it wanted, but every image of triumph was painted in the loss of those I loved most.

Then he clears his throat to speak, and when he does, his voice is low and authoritative, eerily reminiscent of his father, and his words give me déjà vu. I hope that you enjoyed this story. This was one of the first full novels that I wrote. If you have you will also enjoy Across the Desk and the triology that it sparked. it is a dark romance story in which a young woman, Deanna, finds her true love and they forge a bond that not even her insane family can break. The second in the story is Weathering the Storm where their story continues. Then breaking the Eye Wall which they finally find the end of their nightmare together.
