Standing at the altar and watching her come toward me, I understood, with a clarity I had not quite anticipated, exactly why she had chosen to do it this way.
She did not need anyone to bring her to me.
She was coming on her own.
She was choosing this, step by deliberate step, in a room full of people, in front of every version of herself she had ever been, in the long, golden light of a perfect afternoon.
