"Look at me.” Reluctantly, I lifted my gaze to his. I tugged my arm free, this time with enough force to break his grip. I glanced at him, the walls inside me were already crumbling. And for the first time, I felt... something. Something I can’t ignore. “Hell, No,” I whisper, shaking my head. “I’m not some charity case.” “Doesn’t matter.” Nathan’s voice hardens. “You’re not leaving.”

My voice broke, and I felt like I couldn’t breathe anymore, the weight of my pain overwhelming me. Ethan’s hand trembled, and he loosened his grip, his expression pained. “I wasn’t there, but I am now.” He didn’t try to hold me again, the hurt in his eyes clear. “I can’t change what happened, Sophia, but I can be here for you now.” I wiped away the tears that had started to roll down my cheeks, sucking in a shaky breath. “Lily is my only family, and I have to protect her now.” My voice was determined, even as I struggled to regain my composure.
