" I choke on a breath at his proximity, pulling away slightly. I tilt my head, wondering exactly what I want to know. What I need to know. Might as well start with the basics. The second shifter circled around, almost grazing Victor's hip as he hit fur instead and tried to bite into his leg. With a maneuvered slide, the shifter's intended attack got his comrade in the hind leg instead and caused him to lose balance. Victor used the opportunity to slam him into the wall with a loud crack that made him yelp and slump to the floor. The remaining enemy grazed Victor's face this time and jumped back, crouching low so he could get underneath, but Victor knew this move all too well.

The figure watched as the man’s car disappeared around a corner, then turned away from the window, moving to a desk cluttered with documents, maps, and a laptop. They sat down and began typing, their fingers moving swiftly over the keys. The final straightaway before the last debris section and final turn, the place where races were won or lost. Tristan pulled left and started to speed up. Vic swerved left, blocking him. Tristan moved right and Vic moved right too, but I could see Tristan's head tilt slightly, tracking something. Then I heard it, or felt it, really, the subtle change in Vic's engine that meant he was about to shift gears. Tristan moved before Vic's hand even touched the shifter. He shot left, right into the space Vic's momentum was about to pull him out of, and by the time Vic realized what happened, Tristan was already past.

This guy was absolutely bat-sh*t crazy. The king continues despite my silence. "Shifters, like wolves, also have mates. They mate for life and share a strong bond with their mates. A shifter will know when he's met his." I have no idea where he's going with this. "I knew when I saw you, Hera," he says carefully. "What?" I say. "I knew you were my mate."

His smile turned to one of concern and his face became serious. “What do you mean? You said you never got the shifting gene, so you can’t be seventeen.” My eyes widened at his words. That wasn’t what we were told in school. My voice started to come out shaky as thoughts began racing through my mind. “What are you talking about? That’s basic shifting. We learn that as children when we start school. If a Shifter has not transformed by their sixteenth birthday, then it means the shifting gene is absent, and they were cursed to live as humans.
