“About the shifting?” She paused, her hands stilling for a brief second before continuing. “Ethan’s always serious. You’ll learn that soon enough.” “That’s not reassuring,” I scoffed, rolling my eyes away. The sound of rustling interjected the still air. “Good.“ She said in a stern tone. “You shouldn’t feel reassured. Shifting is brutal the first time, especially under stress. But it’s necessary.” I watched as she stepped away to open a metal drawer by a locker set sitting against a charcoal black wall.

When I was far enough in, I dropped my backpack and shifted. The feeling of shifting is a hard to describe. At first it’s painful, with all your bones transitioning to take a new form. It’s not an overwhelming pain, unless done repeatedly in a day. There is a magical aspect in changing form though, one that allows us to appear wearing clothes when we shift back to human form. I appreciate this aspect the most.

"she seems nervous." Maddox whispers to us and we all turn to look at Fraya, her eyes wide with fear. "Does she know how to shift back?" "doesn't seem that way." Agrees Gabriel. "Can we help her?" I ask, hopeful that their is something we can do. she squarks and we all jump, realising for the first time how clumsily she's moving, how she doesn't seem one with her other form. She flaps her wings and shakes a few times, some feathers detaching and falling to the floor.

Once I’ve removed my t-shirt and sports bra, I quickly call my wolf forward. My vision goes shimmery and I feel the familiar surge of energy as my bones snap and rearrange, and in a few seconds I’m down on all fours, shaking out my fur. When I first learned to shift, the transformation was painful. Now, it’s second nature. I barely feel a thing. I glance down at the soft earth under my tan paws, stretch, then circle back to the path.

They shift back breathing heavily, before shifting again, groaning and whimpering at the pain. Newly shifted juveniles aren't used to shifting back and forth yet. They still feel the pain of their bones breaking when they shift. Having them shift back and forth will help them get used to it, to the point where they feel no pain from shifting. I have to shift. The thought sends a ripple of unease through me. When was the last time I shifted? The memory is so distant it feels like it belongs to someone else. My fingers tremble as I strain to shove the heavy book back onto the shelf. The wood creaks under its weight, the sound breaking the oppressive silence.

My marriage certificate had also fallen to the floor, along with another footprint on our photograph. I tried wiping away the shoe print, but the certificate became even dirtier. It seemed to tell me that Jason's love and my marriage to him would never be as pure as it was at the beginning. I called Jason. His dial tone was a rendition of 'Wedding March', which played up to the second bar before being cut off. Stunned, I called again, and was hung up again. By the third time, the call could not even get through. My number had been blocked.

My vision tunnels. I’m going to shift. Fuck. I’m going to shift.

“You’re coming too. Be a witness.” “With pleasure, Brother Liam.” The three of us walked to a small park near the apartment. The place was quiet, only tall trees and a path lit by streetlamps. The full moon hung round and perfect in the sky. I stood in the middle of the park, gazing upward. Beautiful and terrifying all at once. Liam stood beside me. “Listen carefully. Shifting isn’t just about the body. It’s about the mind and control. Breathe deeply. Feel the moon above you. Let its light flow into your body.”

Kade led me back into the trees, away from the cabin, farther than we’d ever gone without backup. “Your body is already changing,” he said as we walked. “But shifting isn’t about muscles or instinct. It’s about surrender.” I raised an eyebrow. “You want me to just… let go?” He stopped by a fallen log and nodded. “Not all the way. Just enough for her to speak.”
