I stepped closer to the middle shelf, my soft work shoes making no sound against the black stone floor. I did not just dust the shelves tonight. I reached out my hand, my thick maintenance glove rubbing against the cold iron, and touched the thick spine of an ancient history book about the early northern territories. I gripped the leather and pulled it out slightly, moving it just half an inch forward. It was no longer perfectly aligned with the rest of the row. It stuck out, a tiny flaw in his perfect wall. Cael folded his arms behind me. "I wasn't aware books had feelings." I turned to glare at him. "They don't." "So separating them won't hurt." "It will hurt me."

But this time it didn't lead me the way it had the first time. Instead, the light suddenly began to flip every single book on the shelf. It came almost like a thick rush of wind, sharp and sudden, and I had to step back quickly to stop myself from being hit by the books flying off the shelves one after the other. The sound of them hitting the floor filled the entire room, loud and fast and relentless. Then just as quickly as it had started, it stopped. Everything became completely calm. Quiet. Still. When I looked down at my feet, the Book of Shadows was right there.

Was it a mistake, or was it never locked at all? I turned on my flashlight and hurried between the towering bookshelves toward the far wall, where the Z section stood. My fingers traced the labels until I found it: Z.333.32. Rows of old books in foreign languages filled the shelf; most of them were thick with dust. Nothing seemed strange until I reached the thirty-second book. When I tried to pull it, it got stuck. I tugged harder. Then, I heard the faint sound of grinding gears from behind the shelf. The bookshelf began to shift.

Elena’s voice echoed again in her mind: “Confront the truth, no matter how ugly.” Bella swallowed the lump in her throat and turned toward the nearest shelf. There was a subtle groove along the edge—a mark she’d never noticed before. She pressed the card against it. A faint click broke the silence. Then a low hum, soft but unmistakable, as a section of the bookshelves began to shift backward. The sound was masked easily by the city’s endless hum outside, but to Bella it felt deafening. The ten-foot wall of books moved away from her, revealing a narrow passage. Cold light spilled from inside, sterile and metallic.

The sound reverberated through the room, and the chandeliers flickered violently, plunging them into near darkness. Ethan grabbed Sophia’s arm, pulling her close. “We’re not alone.” Just as panic began to rise, the books on the shelves began to move. They shifted, pulling themselves from their places as though something unseen was sorting through them. One large, leather-bound book floated off the shelf and hovered in front of them before landing on the desk with a loud thud. Sophia stared at the book, fear and confusion warring within her. “What... is happening?”

And the messages I've been getting today have further strengthened the case for why I should treat this seriously. As I made my way to the shelves, I couldn't for the life of me figure out where the 'Shifters' belonged. After spending a few hours perusing the books in the mythological sections, I left empty-handed. I still know nothing about shifters because it was never even addressed in the texts there. I retrieved a book and made my way to the large table to unwind. There are no people still. And, to be really honest, that's what I wanted. Simply said, I don't want anyone to notice that I searching for these ‘Shifters.’

I ask, hopeful that their is something we can do. she squarks and we all jump, realising for the first time how clumsily she's moving, how she doesn't seem one with her other form. She flaps her wings and shakes a few times, some feathers detaching and falling to the floor.

Less work and more straightforward than her job right now, she needs to deal with the books and paperwork. "Aurora, you can put these journals in this section. Arrange and place the book followed by the character and use the moving stair for the high place, okay?" one of her colleagues, Martha, giving her instruction. "Okay." She replied short. She looked at the basket full of thick books and old journals from old generations. She sorts out the book and places it accordingly with the character. For the last book, she needs to use the moving stair to put it back on the shelf.
