I glared over at Pappi. “This idiot thinks my daughter is still alive and you think that she is the Triple Goddess” I grumbled waving my hands between Pappi and Hina. “Watch your tongue” Hina growled stepping closer to me. I huffed and looked down at my lap. I’m surrounded by nitwits. They were hunters. Trained, strategic, vicious hunters. How could a thirteen-month-old child survive, survive them.

She fanned the flames of a scythe she thought she could control, only to realize she has just unleashed an omnivorous monster that intends to eat her first. ​Lirien lets out a high-pitched scream of panic, scrambling backward on her hands and knees. "Wards! Bind it! Secure the thrall!" ​Her command is useless. The moth-fae are already dying. ​The Shadow Beast doesn't need to lunge. It just opens its massive mouth. Thick, living shadows erupt like striking krakens, wrapping around the fleeing moth-fae. Their papery, translucent wings are crushed instantly. Their clicking screeches are silenced as the Beast simply inhales them, consuming their residual sprite magic in massive, greedy gulps.

She replied, her voice heavy. Then her gaze shifted to me, her eyes silently urging me to reveal the truth. I hesitated for a moment before taking a deep breath and speaking. “There’s something I haven’t told you all,” I began, my voice trembling slightly. “On the day of the mating ceremony, I had an encounter with an old woman. She claimed to be the present moon goddess…my successor. She warned me about a war, about something or someone coming for us…She appeared again today and told me... ‘He is awakened and is coming for me”.

I look at him, not knowing what to say when Shelby gasps, her eyes opening wide, “Helllp!” she breathes out and I gasp, looking into her eyes. “What’s wrong?” I ask her and she holds her throat. “Cant. Breathe.”

The moment Leo launched forward—fangs bared, drenched in death—Shina lifted her hands, eyes glowing white with raw power. “Bring me Raul!” Leo growled as he charged forward in a fit of rage, ready to cut down both Shina and Zane. “Vintra Solas! Bind him!” Shina shouted, her voice echoing across the blood-soaked battlefield like a cannon blast. The air cracked around her as tendrils of silver light exploded from her palms. They snaked through the chaos, moving faster than the eye could track, and in a blinding flash, the tendrils slammed into Leo’s chest.

She landed on top crouching on all four then paused as if she knew that she would surely die if she came closer. My eyes could barely keep up with her movements much less my excellent aim. I felt as if she was toying with us instead of trying to get us. She crouched on top of the playground toy like a tiger eerily stalking her prey. Her glowing red eyes stared us down as she began making the clicking noise again. Craig began to get agitated. "PLEASE! Just let me shoot it." "NO! We can save her remember?" He let out a frustrated sound but stilled his itchy finger on the trigger.

Or rather, what I am. "I'm a monster right? We all are?" My mother takes my chin in between her fingers and turns my face to meet hers. "No, my love. You are just like the others. Just a greater kind." I scoff at her and pull my head away from her grip. "An easier way to call a monster." She takes my hand in hers and squeezes it gently.

In the distance, a sharp screech echoes—like steel grating against steel. It grinds up my spine like a chainsaw. Then we see her. Ītzpāpālōtl. Ten feet tall, rippling with sinewy muscle. Jaguar claws for hands, eagle talons for feet. Her obsidian wings hiss and grind like knives being sharpened midair, and her face is part-human, part-insect skull. She is a walking weapon, nightmare-made-flesh, and we’re supposed to fight that.
