"I did, didn't I? I am going off on a tangent. Shit. I didn't even get one story out without bringing werewolves into it." I smile. "Let me give it a try." When he nods I meet his eyes and smirk. "So when I was a little girl, my best friend was May. The two of us went everywhere together. One day when we were at school a girl came up to me and pushed me. May went over to her and pushed her back. It turns out the girl had a crush on me and didn't want to admit she swung both ways." The laugh he gives me as he puts his hand around my shoulders has me tingling inside. "That is fascinating. Did you know that I never showed interest in men?"

I'd wanted to know what a normal life felt like, so I'd kept that part of myself buried. When I met Samantha, struggling to get by but pushing through school anyway, I made her my best friend. When she couldn't afford the hot meals in the cafeteria, I'd pile extra food onto my tray every day and pretend I couldn't finish it, sliding it over to her. When she couldn't pay for school materials, I'd made up a story about winning a scratch-off and covered it for her. When guys from outside school started giving her trouble, I'd scared them off myself.

The two signatures on it felt like they were mocking me. I had thought I was the happiest woman in the world, with a successful career, a caring husband, and a best friend who understood me. But in the end, I was just the clown in someone else's story. The tears finally spilled over, and I covered my mouth as my body shook with sobs. I kept asking myself over and over, "Why me? What did I do wrong?" But after the crying stopped, I finally woke up to the truth. There had been signs all along.

I remember when Sharon would tell me she would go over to his place when Tony was working and staying at his condo downtown. “Yeah, and they played it off like it was no big deal,” “Well to them, it is no big deal,” I stated.
