I'm just here to supervise my friends and drink water like a responsible adult." He lets out a deep chuckle. "Yeah. That tracks. You've always been real good at takin' care of everybody else." A heavy beat settles between us, filled with memories from last year. Pain. Love. Healing. Moments between us that mattered—and still do—without needing to be anything more. "How are you, War?" I ask, my eyes searching his face.

What a thing of joy indeed! On seeing the beautiful reaction from Junior and David, their mothers were shocked and confused at the same time; as they kept wondering where and how the little boys met each other to the extent that they even referred to themselves as ‘Friends’. Suddenly I feel nervous. It’s not like he would try to pull something on me on the first day we met, right? And certainly not while I am dressed like this? But why did he inadvertently try to ask if I had a boyfriend? Maybe I should invite him in and see where it goes? No, that’s probably a bad idea... we are neighbours after all. Mad because she didn’t know I liked him in the first place, and she’s mad because she walked in on the wrong part of a conversation.” “What was said?” “I was on the beach having a conversation with Mason, Alyx, and Jarren.
