Maya’s heart hammered against her ribs as the heavy steel door clicked shut behind her. The invitation had cost her three grand and a favor from a source who owed her big. *The Vault* didn’t advertise. You got in because someone who mattered wanted you there—or because you were useful. Tonight she was both: freelance journalist chasing a story on the ultra-rich and their dirty little playgrounds.

On the windowsill sat a pot of blooming bougainvilleas. When I pushed open the window, the salty sea breeze carried the scent of lemon blossoms toward me. For the first time in three years, I could breathe freely. I put down my suitcase and went into town to buy some daily necessities from the market. The old woman selling fruit smiled and gave me two extra oranges, saying in broken Anglic, "Welcome to town, young lady." Suddenly, I felt like crying. In the years I spent with the Moretti family, I had grown accustomed to the coldness and scheming of others. Now, faced with the kindness of a stranger, it felt unreal.

“It’s fine, he is just too enthusiastic sometimes.” Exhausted, she collapsed on the windowsill, bracing her knees. I sat beside her. “Well, I guess you did as I told.” Jo nodded, still inspecting us from head to toe. Now that she was able to differentiate every detail it must be quite a sight. “Good, now then we can talk about your future.” the affirmation made her shrink. “It’s useless to say that you’re not in the human world anymore. It was my first ever book since I downloaded this w******l app, and it has been my favorite ever since. It tells the story of Carter, the son of a poor farmer in the countryside. Because of how penniless they are, they have to sell Carter—who’s an 18 years old that year—to the capital to work as a guard. His change started when the horse cart that brought him and 12 other village kids got ransacked by a goblin. Every single one of them died except Carter who managed to escape into the forest.
