Complete silence for what feels like an eternity. “…what?”

I snapped my mouth shut. Okay. Silence it is.

The deeper he went, the more frantic he became. He called my name over and over again, but no one answered. Laila had followed him outside, and finally, she snapped. "Philip, stop. Grace's a grown woman. She's not lost—she's just being dramatic again. Why are you making this such a big deal—" "Shut up!" Philip snapped, turning on her with fire in his eyes. "Keep your mouth shut, or get the hell out of my sight!" He kept moving, heart thudding with every step.

Finally, she remembered that when she was younger, she was able to talk and just be quiet. It was the fact that she had been shunned at the rogue pack not to talk that she had been quiet all these while. Bingo! Maybe if she said a word, they could understand what she was saying, and maybe she could tell them she needed hearing aids and she couldn’t hear what they were saying to her. She opened her mouth, and all that came out was, “I-I-I” Well, that was a start she was certain that if she tried even harder, she was going to get it.

Neither spoke. Nate stared at him. Max stared back. And in the silence between them, everything they'd spent months refusing to say seemed to gather at once. The door remained open. Neither of them moved. Neither looked away.

Silence returns. But it is no longer suffocating. It is shelter.

The specific silence of something that has finally, fully, stopped. And then Nothing.
