Wife… Malcolm sighed, it seemed he was getting too used to the term—and he seemed to love it. Just then, his phone rang and at the sight of the caller’s ID, he quickly signaled the whipping to stop. He ordered that Yolanda be gagged to avoid making a noise, soon, the noise-filled tunnel was as silent as a graveyard. Only then did Malcolm answer the phone, making a low growl to indicate to who it was that he was listening. He didn’t say a word but minutes later, his face turned grave and like lightning, he was gone.

It was like watching someone trapped behind glass, screaming in a void. I walked behind him, and pressed my fingers at the side of his head. “Show me,” I whispered, letting the power pull me deeper.

Offered quiet advice. Watched her like she understood things no one else did. And maybe she had. Just not in the way Sienna thought. ⸻ A floorboard creaked under Sienna’s foot. The Beta swallowed. “—It means the mate is either dead… or close to it.” For a second, everything froze. Then both Ash and I growled, the sound ripping from deep in our chests, feral and deadly. The Beta took a step back.

“ Meara!” The whispers started again, soft but notable. I tensed, my eyes snapping open. I scanned the field, but there was no one in sight. The sound seemed to come from the tree itself, from the rustling of its leaves. I pressed my palms against the rough bark and closed my eyes, focusing on the whispers. " Come... find... me..." The words were faint but distinct. My heart raced. Was I losing my mind, or was there something more to these whispers? I stood up, brushing the dirt off my jeans, and took a few steps back. The whispers grew louder, more insistent.

" Shiloh paused. She looked Manuel straight in the eyes, a faint smile on her lips. "Want me to keep going?" Manuel went pale, but he still tried to defend himself. "It's not what you think. Rainee's always been timid. She's scared of the dark. Thunder terrifies her. Whenever there was a storm, she'd grab her stuffed bunny and come to my room. "After all these years, sleeping next to her on rainy nights just became a habit. That doesn't mean I loved her..."

Neither spoke. Nate stared at him. Max stared back. And in the silence between them, everything they'd spent months refusing to say seemed to gather at once. The door remained open. Neither of them moved. Neither looked away.

Silence returns. But it is no longer suffocating. It is shelter.
