This silence was disturbed by the faint sound of a door opening and closing—the door to Malik and Dima's room. Hussein's eyelids fluttered, and he opened his eyes slowly, as if some hidden instinct had awakened him despite his exhaustion.

"You like acting like a crazy b*tch, huh? I'll show you how it's done!" As Roanna screamed in pain, Scott arrived at the scene. "So you brought this crazy woman here, huh? What part of 'Wendy needs peace and quiet' don't you understand?!" Not wasting another word, Scott clasped his hand over Roanna's mouth and dragged her out by the throat. As peace returned to the courtyard, I didn't even have the energy to think what they were talking about outside. Nervous, Mary said, "He's found us, so we have to go. He darted up the stairs, or I assumed he did. Once he started moving I couldn’t see anything but a shifting shadow against the dark. He didn’t make a sound as he moved. For all I could see or hear there was nothing on the stairs but a shadow. We waited. I barely dared to breathe. The vampire woman put a hand on my shoulder. I wasn’t sure whether she was offering comfort, or trying to keep me close.

The previous playfulness disappeared from his face as he sat frozen on his soft side, not even moving a bit. His prolonged silence thumped my heart as if it challenged me to correct the mistake I made unintentionally. However, I had no idea what I did wrong. So, taking a safer route, I closed my eyes, pretending to be asleep. That was when Cassian finally broke his silence. He grabbed my wrist, catching me off guard. “No!” he said, his voice rough. “You can’t ignore me like this.” My heart leapt to my throat as my eyes flew open, only to find shadows of darkness clouding Cassian’s features. He narrowed his dark eyes and said,

“ Meara!” The whispers started again, soft but notable. I tensed, my eyes snapping open. I scanned the field, but there was no one in sight. The sound seemed to come from the tree itself, from the rustling of its leaves. I pressed my palms against the rough bark and closed my eyes, focusing on the whispers. " Come... find... me..." The words were faint but distinct. My heart raced. Was I losing my mind, or was there something more to these whispers? I stood up, brushing the dirt off my jeans, and took a few steps back. The whispers grew louder, more insistent.

If I slept, I'd see my parents again. I resisted, fighting the seductive pull of darkness with all my might. I knew it was lying to me, but I couldn't speak. It felt like I was choking. I could only run—run... Just as the suffocating sensation threatened to consume me, a beam of light tore through the darkness like a sword. I, too, overcame the heaviness in my chest.
