A Bed Of Roses
Suddenly, the low hum of the generators snapped off.
The silence that followed was instantaneous and heavy. A second later, the golden light from the bedside lamps died, plunging the massive master bedroom into total, ink-black darkness.
I sat up straight in the bed, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird. The air in the room instantly felt colder.
"Martinez?" I called out into the dark, my voice thin and trembling.
No one answered. The silence inside the house was absolute, but through the heavy glass of the terrace windows, a sudden burst of sound cut through the freezing mist. It wasn't the loud, chaotic roar of a firefight. It was a series of quick, muffled pops.
